Looking to interview someone about a PR internship
Hey there. New member here. Not only am I new to the community, but I'm new to the PR field as well. I recently decided to major in strategic communications, and I'm looking for some help.

I'd like to interview someone who has done an internship in public relations relatively recently. I am also looking to interview someone who has done an internship in advertising, but I don't think I'll find one here. Just thought I'd mention it. Anyway, I want to know more about actually working in the field so that I can further my understanding of public relations. I'm not sure yet if I want to focus on PR or advertising, and I'm hoping this interview will help! So if you have some time to answer a few questions about your internship, please send me a private message through LJ or an email at ambrosiablossom@yahoo.com. There won't be very many questions (10 at the absolute maximum), and answers don't need to be more than a few sentences long. :)

Thanks, guys! I hope I get to chat with some of you!

    The economy.
So apparently the economy isn't doing so great lately. Do you think that's affected the number of available PR jobs out there?

I'm mostly curious because I'm graduating this weekend and concerned about finding a job. Thus far, I've applied to a few places that say they have available positions.. but I don't know.

Hi guys! I was invited to the mandatory orientation for Public relations program in Semeca College. I just wanted to ask if anyone here underwent this thing, how difficult was the assignment, etc.  Thank you!

     Hi everybody!
I have a B.A. in English and French (double major), an M.A. in English and a teaching certificate.
after some experience in teaching I realized that what really interests me is the world of PR.
A change in career is always stressing and exciting. And this is also true about  the dilemma I'm facing now. On the one hand, I am eager to try my myself in something new and also more practical than teaching, on the other, I am nervous about my desire for a career change at 29. Has anybody gone through a similar situation? Could anyone share his/her story with me? Thank you all!

    San Diego

I am currently working at a PR agency in Cleveland, Ohio, but I'm looking to move to San Diego this summer. Anyone here from southern California? Know of any respected agencies out there? Have any tips?
I'm starting to really get into my job research and update my resume, but I'm looking for any networking opportunities while I'm at it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    cover letter
Would someone mind critiquing a cover letter I have just written? I don't want to post it here, but if I could email you, that would be great. Ideally, I hope for complete, utter honesty from someone in the field. Thanks in advance!

    McCain's PR Tour

I have to say, I love the idea of a biographical "get-to-know-you" tour. I wish I had thought of it myself. His PR guy sure earned his salary with that idea. I'm saving that one for future reference.

If I were an advisor though, I would want to try to highlight lots of other accomplishments, not just the war-hero angle. Don't get me wrong, it's a good angle... but people are giong to want to know more than the events that took place in Vietnam. I'm just sayin.

    Stupid question of the day...
So I'm majoring in PR and minoring in Advertising. I am slowly starting with the whole job search and am a little lost when it comes to what I should be doing. I know I want to end up doing promotion of some sort in the future(hopefully in music but I'll be happy doing any type of promotion). Am I even majoring in the right field? Are there certain jobs I should be looking out for? I'm truthfully so lost and terrified, haha. Any help/insight would be wonderful!

    writing samples
I'm graduating in May and some of the places I'm interested in want me to include writing samples with my resume/cover letter. What kind of writing samples should I include? Press releases? Papers I've written for school? Do I print it out on my resume paper? I don't know if these questions are silly, but I want to be very detailed and make sure they see me to my best advantage.

    Calling all renters!
Fellow PR people! If you could help me and fill out this short survey for my CAP400 PR class, that would be great! I am the director for our agency and were doing some research. There is an incentive of multiple cash prizes for randomly selected participants. The survey is regarding how much renters know about mortgages. Thanks! Some questions for PR practitioners
Hello all. I'm not a public relations professional, but I do work in marketing. I also have an interest in the decline of audience and influence of traditional media, and that's why I am posting this.

There is a lot of info available in the news about how audience erosion for, say, newspapers, magazines or network TV is affecting the world of advertising. I am curious if it is changing the way PR campaigns are executed. Specifically I was wondering if there has been a noticeable decline in the effectiveness of PR efforts that employ traditional news outlets? (I'd be interested in hearing about any anecdotal information, as well as any research that might have been done about this.)

Related to that, are there any trends in the world of PR along the lines of bypassing or decreasing the role the traditional media (e.g. word of mouth campaigns, relying less on news releases, etc.)

Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to shed some light on this for me!

Correcting the Public Relations Industry's Image Problem
There is a great paradox currently facing the public relations industry. On the one hand, there is more awareness and appreciation of the power, influence and utility of publicity and media relations than ever before. On the other, there has never been so much misunderstanding and misinformation about what PR practitioners actually do. It almost makes one long for the days when professionals in the field were dismissed as flacks or caricatured in films like The Sweet Smell of Success. Instead, today we are often seen as all-powerful spinmeisters or Svengalis, ready at a moment's notice to put one over on the press and the public by obfuscating the truth or peddling a bogus story.

    Salaries in hockey
My career goal is to be a Media Services/PR person for a professional hockey team, but out of curiosity, does anyone know how much $$$ people in that capacity make? Doesn't necessarily have to be in hockey, but really in any professional sport. Thanks for any help.

    Question..
I'm applying for 2 positions on my university campus in the creative media division of our Associated Student group. The jobs I'm going for are either Writer/Editor or Marketing Assistant. I've had one promotions internship, and I only got to do one press release, and none of the slogans I ever came up with went to print. Because of this, I'm not sure how to even create my portfolio! I just barely finished working through the core courses in my major; I'm just now starting the big league stuff, but I know I'm capable of doing a good job, and it would be a great way for me to get some hands-on learning experience.

How do I position a portfolio? Does anyone have an example press release I could see? If I came up with slogans for the station for various projects, how would I do them on paper? I'm not especially gifted in the "logo design" area, so I don't want anything too fancy, but I don't want simplicity to detract from my slogans.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

    PR Portfolio
I have an interview at a really creative Ad/PR agency for an unpaid internship. I REALLY want this! The job description says they want somebody wo is very creative, so I was thinking about making my portfolio look like a press kit. I have never made a press kit before though and could use a little help.

I was wondering if anybody has advice about doing this and/or could help me with ideas of what to put in there. I am going to have a Fact Sheet w/ a quick run down of my accomplishments, a Profile which would be about me kind of like a cover letter, a sheet that has "Quotes from experts" or something which would be excerpts from my letters of rec, etc. Perhaps a brochure... Not entirely sure how to fit my writing samples in there. I have a press release I wrote for a class which I think is pretty good..hmmm! I am also planning to include a CD that has the full length letters of rec and some longer writing samples, like my honors thesis, etc.

Though I have learned about press kits and what goes into them, I have never really seen one. I know they sometime have quotes from people on a page but am not sure what to call that page.

I want it to be very obvious what I am trying to do. The last thing I want is for them to be confused about whether this is my portfolio or what...I am also debating if it is appropriate to have a photo of myself on the "profile" page...

    Please let me know:
    1. If you have recommendations, advice or suggestions on how to execute this
    2. If you know a website where I could look at samples of press kits
    3. A list of what usually goes into a press kit!

thank you! thank you! I would be forever grateful:)
